Living with chronic illnesses has not been an easy task over the years. I was misdiagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome for most of my life before learning I had Crohn’s disease in 2010. This disease has put an incredible strain on my body, forcing me to take early retirement and becoming my full-time responsibility.
In addition to my illness, I have been dependent on expensive medications, one of which has a monthly list price of almost $25,000. It is simply impossible for me to afford it. Without financial support from a copay assistance program, I would have to go without my medications and experience painful flare-ups and inflammation. No one should be put in such a difficult situation to access life-extending drugs.
Fortunately, the drug price reforms in the Inflation Reduction Act address the needs of millions of patients like me, who are forced to pay extreme prices for essential medications. Under the landmark law, Medicare will implement an annual $2,000 limit on out-of-pocket costs starting in January 2025.
This historic measure provides me and my family with peace of mind knowing that I will be able to better afford my prescription medications if I ever go without my copay assistance.
